Happe
Happe was my final year Visual Communications and Design project. Happe is an illustrative storytelling based project, commenting on stories associated with food in the Anthropocene. From where our food comes from, being prepared, eaten and even digested. The target audience was all customers, but more specifically, Stellenbosch students.
Logo Design
Why Happe? The afrikaans word happie, means a small bite. The english word happy means to be cheerful. Therefore, the two words were put together to create Happe. The logo for Happe was created to mimic the texture of food being eaten and mixed with spit in our mouths. The motion and mixture that takes place brings all the food together as one unit to be digested by the person. This was used as the foundation for Happe as food being eaten by the consumer brings people together.

Character Design
The most used colours for Happe is green and orange. The reason for this is the that many food companies use orange in their designs. Orange reminds people of hunger and thirst and is a very vivid colour. Green, on the other hand, creates a harmonising effects and is easy on the eye. Therefore, they make a perfect combination. Hybrid characters were designs as half animal and half student. This was done to create relation between the two worlds and when it comes to food, the two world merge to one.

Comic Design
Inside Frank, in a comic created to comment on foodways in the Anthropocene. The comic portrays the adventure food takes in our digestive system. Highlighting whatever we eat and it’s journey and how it has an effect on us just as we effect them. It portrays humans and nonhumans as mutual entities.

Editorial Design
The book layout for Happe was based upon the dimensions used around a table. I studied the various recommended dimensions and spacing which has to be used between a person and the person sitting next to them, as well as the spacing between our plates and ourself. These dimensions were used to create a grid for my research article layout.
